VICTIM MOTEN WYNN________________________DATE 06/16/93

OFFENSE HOMICIDE__________________________SUSPECT  ANTHONY W. GRIFFIN

When I arrived at the Clarksville, TN, Police Department, I met with Sgt. Parr who then introduced me to Dets. M. Watson and E. Kellet, the investigators who were handling the Anthony Wayne Griffin case on their end.

Det. Watson said that on Monday, 06-14-1993, he was interviewing Anthony W. Griffin regarding some forgeries and burglaries that had happen in their jurisdiction.  Det. Watson said that after he had finished talking to Mr. Griffin about their cases, he (Watson) asked Griffin if there was anything else he wanted to talk about, and Griffin told him that he probably ought to tell him about this man he killed in Arkansas about 2 weeks ago.  Watson said that he got Det. Kellet to come in and help him with further interviewing on Griffin.

Sgt. Parr then called the Crittenden Co. Sheriff’s Dept. to check anfd see if there had indeed been a homicide during that period which we were working on.

Det. Watson went to the jail and brought Anthony W. Griffin to the PD interview room where I told Mr. Griffin who I was and that I needed to ask him some questions about this homicide he had been talking about.

I read Mr. Griffin a copy of the Waiver of Rights form which he responded to and initailed his responses.  Mr. Griffin then signed the Waiver.  I asked Mr. Griffin how far he had gone in school and he said that he had quit during his senior year.

In a taped interview, Mr. Griffin described how he had gotten to the West Memphis area; different places he had seen and been in West Memphis, and how he had gotten to Lehi.  He also told of meeting Moten Wynn, the victim, at his house near PJ’s Country store.  He described what Wynn had been doing, how Wynn had helped him, and that Wynn had given him $2.00 and some cigarettes.  Griffin said that Wynn had gotten him a ride to Blue Lake, but that he didn’t have the $3.00 admission charge to get in, so he hitch-hiked back to Lehi.

Anthony Griffin said that he went back to Wynn’s residence and that he was still at home.  Griffin said that Wynn let him into the house and they had talked for an hour or so.  Griffin said that Wynn kept saying he was getting ready to go eat supper and showed signs of wanting to leave the house.  Anthony Griffin said that he (Griffin) wanted out and was ready to leave so when the old man (Wynn) stood up, Griffin said he hit him on the side of his head with his fist and knocked him down.  Griffin described how he had tied Wynn up, both hands and feet.  He said he drug him into a bedroom.  When he was asked which bedroom, he was able to describe the layout of the house and finally said it was in the back bedroom.

Griffin said that he kept asking “the old man” if he had any guns around the house and that he (Wynn) kept saying he did not.  Griffin said that he had found a pistol under on mattress and another pistol under another mattress in the front bedroom.  Griffin said he found a shotgun in a corner in the front

bedroom.

Anthony Griffin was able to describe the manner in which Mr. Wynn had been tied up, what materials and colors of materials used to tie him up, and in what position Wynn was left in the back bedroom.  Griffin told what Wynn’s head and shoulders were wrapped in and what its color was.  Griffin was able to described the weapon (the htachet) and where he had found it in Wynn’s house.  He said that he had jerked the cord from the phone located in the living room, and items he had seen on a couch beside the front door.

Griffin described what type and color clothing Moten Wynn was wearing when he left the risidence.  Griffin said that Wynn was wearing no shoes, just socks.  Griffin said he had gone through Wynn’s pockets and got his car keys, but that he had found no money on Wynn.

Griffin said that he had taken the 2 pistols, the shotgun, and a box with some tools in it when he left the Wynn residence.  Anthony Griffin said that he had left by the back door and was able to describe the locking device that Wynn has on his back door.

Griffin was asked several times about taking any money from Wynn or the house and he said he had not found any.  All he had taken was the items he listed above and the victim’s 1978 Ford Thunderbird.

Using the times given by Griffin and driving times, it seems that Moten Wynn was killed on 05-30-93, somewhere between 3 PM and 6 PM.

Griffin said that after he left the Wynn house, he had driven west for about 30 minutes, turned around, and driven back to Nashville the same afternoon Wynn was killed (05-30-93).  Griffin said he had gotten back toi Nashville around 11 PM, Sunday night.  Anthony Griffin said that he had picked up a hitch-hiker some where down the road and he let him out.  He said he then drove to Clarksville and spent the rest of Sunday night.  Mr. Griffin said he drove back to Nashville on Monday where he sold the 1978 Ford Thunderbird belonging to the victim at the junk yard he described.

It was learned by Det. Watson that Griffin had sold 1 pistol and the shotgun to an individual in Clarksville, Dicky Martin, and the other pistol to an individual, name unknown.  The pistol and shotgun were recovered from Mr. Martin and returned to the CCSO by Inv. Brockwell.  See recovered property sheet.

Det. Watson will be contacted about a statement from Martin and the 2nd subject as well as a photo line-up for identification purposes of Anthony Griffin.

The taped interview from Anthony Wayne Griffin will be transcribed as soon as possible.
