OFFENSE HOMICIDE__________________________SUSPECT

On 05-31-93, shortly before 10 PM, I was notified by the Crittenden Co. Sheriff’s Dept. dispatcher John Wood, of a homicide at Lehi.  Dep. David Sanders called my residence to state that an black male had been found in the first house south of the Lehi Liquor Store in Lehi.  Sanders said that the victim was found bound up with a blanket over his head.  Sanders said that when he found the body he observed that the victim’s hands and feet were tied behind him.  Dep. Sanders said he immediately left the scene and sealed it, leaving Dep. Paul Weaver to guard the scene while he made the necessary phone calls.

I advised dispatcher John Wood to notify Chief Investigator R>D> CLay regarding the situation.  Inv. Clay was in his car and immediately went to the scene, arriving shortly before I did.  My arrival time on the scene was 2225 hours.

On entering the residence by the back door, front door being locked, Sanders directed me to a rear bedroom on the southeast corner of the house.

Upon stepping to the doorway, I observed a black male laying on the floor face down.  The victim’s hands and feet were bound behind the back with hands and feet pulled together.  A light blue blanket was over the victim’s head.  An area of the blanket which covered the approximate area of the top of the head was seen to have blood coming through the blanket.

Photographs of the scene were taken from numerous angles, both Polaroid and 35 mm, by Invs. Clay and Brockwell, and by Coroner Kent Hale.

The victim’s was observed to be wearing pants but no shirt.  The victim had socks on but no shoes.

Observed at the scene was a hatchet laying upper right from the victim’s head.  The blood on the blanket was rectangular in shape, roughly matching the shape of the hatchet head.

The crime scene and the residence was searched by Invs Clay and Brockwell, along with Dep. David Sanders.  Evidence recovered was bagged and tagged.  The hatchet was recovered and bagged.

The victim was known to have smoked PALL MALL unfiltered cigarettes and several cigarettes butts of this brand were recovered from various ash trays.  Also recovered were several cigarette butts of unknown brands.  One cigarette butt was recovered from the floor of the crime scene, laying near the left leg of the victim.  The cigarette carried the brand name BASIC.

he house generally appeared to be very messy in appearance.  Due to this condition, it was hard to determine if the house had been searched previously.  General impression was that the house had not been searched.

After a search of the residence, Coroner Kent Hale removed the blanket from the victim’s head and injuries were observed and photographed.  Injuries to the

head were observed to be a blow over the right eye, a blow on the upper left side of the head (upper rear corner of the skull) approximating the size and shape of the hatchet head, and a much harder blow to the head on the left rear corner of the skull slightly above the ear.

The victim was found to be gagged with an orange shop type rag, knotted on the rear of the head.

The victim’s feet and hands were found to be tied together with 3 separate types of material.  A white cord, approx. 3/16ths diameter, a piece of red electrical wire approx. 12-14 gauge, and a brown electrical extension cord were the materials used.

Also photographed and received as evidence 1 new ball cap, a tie-rod end to and what appeared to be a whip of some type.  The whip appeared to be made from some type of belting material approximately 2” wide and slightly tapered.  The free end had been split several times to a depth of about 3 inches.  The [cut off] part was bolted to a round wooden handle roughly 12-14 inches in length.  These items were recovered from a couch near the front door of the residence.

A telephone was found on the floor near the north wall of the living room close to the end of the couch.  The phone receiver was not connected to the base and the wall cord appeared to have been pulled from the phone base.  Several strands of wire were observed sticking from the cord.

The body of the victim was removed from the scene by Coroner Kent Hale and the Medical Examiner’s Office was to be notified by Hale.
